Pelvic Floor Muscles are a group of muscles that provide structural support to keep organs such as the bladder, uterus, and intestines in the correct position and protect them from external trauma.
They play various roles, such as holding urine, assisting bowel movements, playing a role in childbirth, and supporting sexual function. The field of Pelvic Physiotherapy is applied in cases related to pelvic floor problems, such as:
- Urinary Incontinence
- Constipation
- Vaginal Laxity
- Painful Intercourse
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse
- Frequent Urination & Difficulty Emptying the Bladder
- Diastasis Recti (Abdominal Muscle Separation), etc.
At Op. Dr. Engin Sarıca Clinic, postpartum pelvic examination and pelvic floor muscle measurements are conducted on the 40th day by Physiotherapist Beste Melek Kumak, with patient information provided based on the examination findings. Pelvic Physiotherapy treatments, including electrical stimulation and biofeedback applications, pelvic floor muscle training, positioning, and manual therapy, are tailored according to the patient's examination results.
Benefits of Pelvic Physiotherapy Program
The pelvic physiotherapy program helps develop controlled contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles, preventing pelvic floor muscle problems. Healthy pelvic floor muscles that can contract and relax properly ensure the maintenance of well-being in urinary control, bowel activities, and sexual functions.
Postpartum pelvic physiotherapy helps minimize the impact of pregnancy and childbirth on the pelvic floor muscles, supports the return of pelvic muscles to their pre-pregnancy health and control, and aids in a quick adaptation to the postpartum period.
Pelvic Physiotherapy Prevention Program
This program is designed to prevent the progression of pelvic floor muscle weakness or controlled relaxation issues that show no symptoms and provide protection against conditions like urinary incontinence, uterine-bladder prolapse, pelvic pain, etc. It aims to protect against the loss of function that may develop.
In the postpartum period, the program is designed to help the mother quickly return to her pre-pregnancy health and accelerate postpartum adaptation.
Symptomatic Treatment
If the patient presents with any complaints such as urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, etc., a treatment program is planned after examination with the goal of eliminating the symptoms.
Especially for issues like vaginismus and other painful sexual intercourse problems, as well as pelvic physiotherapy following genital aesthetic surgeries, our physiotherapy applications contribute to improving surgical outcomes and support the natural aesthetic appearance of the pelvic muscles.
When and How is Pelvic Physiotherapy Applied?
Before the sessions, patients are required to sign a Personal Data Protection Law (KVKK) consent form. Afterward, all patients who will undergo pelvic physiotherapy will have an initial session with our physiotherapist, who will fill out an assessment form, explain the process to the patient, and coordinate pilates/yoga sessions and pelvic physiotherapy sessions during or after pregnancy. Exercises can begin after the 14th week if there are no medical contraindications.
After the sessions, detailed information about what was done is provided. Following the final session, the patient's physical evaluation and physiotherapist's comments are documented and shared with your doctor, Op. Dr. Engin Sarıca.
All patients who give birth by cesarean or vaginal delivery will be assessed by the physiotherapist during the 40th-day post-delivery consultation. The initial assessment and grading are recorded, and exercise programs are planned.
Pelvic physiotherapy programs are available at our clinic for conditions like urinary incontinence, constipation, vaginal laxity, painful sexual intercourse, pelvic organ prolapse, frequent urination & difficulty emptying the bladder, diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation), etc.
Pelvic physiotherapy sessions typically last 4-6 sessions, with each session planned for one hour per week. If necessary, the number and duration of sessions can be increased, with prior information provided to the patients.
