The word "doula" comes from ancient Greek and means "a woman who supports another woman."
A doula is a trained and experienced woman who provides physical, emotional, and psychological support to the mother and father during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. With her expertise, the doula guides the mother through pregnancy and birth, helping her cope with fears, which brings comfort and reassurance. This supportive role can be filled by the mother’s partner, a family member, or a friend. The difference with a doula is that she performs this role professionally, having undergone specific training and relying on defined, evidence-based practices.
Research has shown that the presence of a doula in the birth process, through methods used to prepare the mother for labor, can reduce the need for many medical interventions.
Since its establishment, the clinic of Op. Dr. Engin Sarıca has systematically implemented doula practices, focusing on prepartum (before birth), intrapartum (during labor), and postpartum (after birth) support for both mother and baby. Our expert doulas, trainers, and lactation consultants work with a holistic approach to touch lives and make a difference.
At Op. Dr. Engin Sarıca clinic, the preparation for childbirth begins from the 28th week of pregnancy with the Pregnancy Support and Birth Preparation Program. Through regular weekly online and in-person consultations, the mother’s pregnancy process is assessed, including family dynamics, expectations from the team and the process, areas of anxiety and fear, and other personal data. This helps tailor the program to meet the individual needs of the mother. Throughout the process, we focus on a wide range of topics, from physical exercise and preparation to nutrition, clothing choices, social life modifications, shopping lists for the mother and baby, and even preparing the birth bag together. Information is provided on non-medical interventions and relaxation techniques to be used during labor, and a discussion is held to determine which methods are most suitable for the mother, making the process personalized.
