EFT is an energy body technique. It is easy to apply and quick. It is applied by performing acupressure on the meridian points on the hands and face, which are acupuncture points, without the use of needles. From this perspective, it is also referred to as needle-free acupuncture. With the affirmation exercises it includes, it is similar to NLP.
History
It began in the 1960s and 1970s with George Goodheart and John Diamond. American psychologist Roger Callahan, in 1980, was unable to treat a patient suffering from severe headaches and nightmares due to a fear of water through traditional methods. While working on the body’s energy system, Callahan instinctively tapped with his fingertips on the points under the patient’s eyes, which are the endpoints of the stomach meridian, when the patient mentioned pain in their stomach. The patient then reported that their fear of water had disappeared, and they immediately ran to the nearest swimming pool to splash water on their face. This led Callahan to focus his research in this direction, and he developed a new energy technique called TFT (Thought Field Therapy).
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a method that helps individuals overcome emotional blockages. The goal of this technique is to free the emotions that have accumulated and are causing discomfort, helping the person feel more liberated. It can be categorized under several subheadings:
- Awareness Creation: The first step is to become aware of emotional blockages. Take some time to understand how you are feeling emotionally. Try to identify which emotions are causing you to feel stuck and explore the reasons behind them. This way, you can focus on your own specific issues and be ready to let go of what is not yours. Awareness in the present moment opens the door to communicate with the inner self and helps focus.
- Emotional Expression: The second step is to express these emotional blockages. Use any method you prefer to release the emotions you are feeling. This can be done through journaling, talking to a friend, engaging in an artistic activity, or releasing emotions through the body. Being able to express our emotions is crucial for understanding that we are not alone, and it helps bring to light the blockages we have buried deep inside, which we believed to be untouchable. Making these blockages visible will accelerate their resolution.
- Self-Compassion: During the emotional liberation process, don't forget to be compassionate toward yourself. Remind yourself that releasing the emotions you feel is a natural and healthy process. Rather than criticizing or judging yourself, show understanding and patience. Deepen your communication with yourself and become your own friend.
- Meditation and Breathing Exercises: Meditation and deep breathing can also help in the emotional liberation process. Meditation can calm the mind and help release emotional blockages. Let go of your thoughts and become the observer, not the protagonist of the story. As thoughts fulfill their desires, you will become aware of many things. Deep breathing will reduce your stress and relieve tension in your body.
- Professional Help: If your emotional blockages are very deep or you feel you need assistance, a professional counselor can guide you and offer support for a deeper emotional liberation process.
